The Danger of A Single Story ›
man this was so powerful. after watching this video, i started exploring the ted website and i was so inspired by how many amazing people there are in this world. and to think, that God created every single one of us to be so unique, all with our own beautiful stories to share. the myriad of people in this world is truly a testament to God’s unfathomably multi-faceted character. so mind-blowing! hehe
Why I want to do what I want to do, told through Chimamanda Adichie.
I feel like I understand where she’s coming from, and I agree with her, but on the account of Korea. People still think of Korea as impoverished country, and I don’t know about people from California since they’re surrounded by Koreans all over, but I still get asked questions like, “Are you from North or South Korea?” from frowning, skeptical faces of supposedly “educated” people who think I’m a spy from NK. I feel like I relate to her story of coming to US and experiencing her roommate’s ignorance because I, myself, came from a different country other than US and experienced the same exact stare, the same exact ignorant questions, and the immature bullying just because I wasn’t raised and cultured in American way. I think not being able to speak American language and to understand what they were saying about me let alone stand up for myself and my country contributed to a lot of the bullying too.
Like Chimamanda Adichie have said, I too, am guilty of this ignorance. I have so much to read, so much to learn, so much to research about this world and the cultures, the gifts and differences that God created, and sometimes, I feel ashamed as a student studying Anthropology for being so ignorant.
I want to learn, and I still have a long way to go, but I’m excited about the process. :)
